Masters Sensation As Gurney Considers Snub
Northern Irish Star Daryl Gurney came agonizingly close to skipping the Masters after receiving repeated prank calls from numbers he didn't recognize.
Gurney, a two-time BDO world champion and former Premier League finalist, revealed on social media that he had been getting several calls from unknown numbers in the lead-up to the prestigious event.
Fearing they were from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) with a £1,000 ($1340) fine for speeding, Gurney blocked the numbers.
However, it turned out that the calls were actually from the Masters organizers, who were trying to confirm his attendance.
Gurney said he was "gutted" when he realized what had happened and that he had come close to missing out on the tournament.
"I usually block them because it's usually a DVLA fine," Gurney said. "I had about seven missed calls and I just blocked them all."
Gurney's fans will be relieved that he eventually received the message and will be able to compete in the Masters, which takes place from January 27-29 at the Alexandra Palace in London.
