Burrower Bugs: The Underground Insects
What Burrower Bugs Are
Burrower bugs are a family of insects known as Cydnidae. These insects dwell in soil and occasionally leave their underground homes to migrate to new locations, typically within the same field or a nearby field. Burrower bugs are favored by hot and dry conditions.
Physical Characteristics
Burrower bugs range in length from 2 to 20 mm and are dark ovoid in shape. They have a highly sclerotized body, meaning the outer layer of their exoskeleton is hardened for protection. The head is generally subquadrate to semicircular in shape and has a pair of 5-segmented antennae.
